Bio / Bibliography:

Koenraad Kuiper was born in Hannover in 1944. His parents returned to the Netherlands at the end of World War II, living in Rotterdam, from where they emigrated in 1951 to New Zealand, living first in Auckland and then in Wellington. He was educated at Westlake High School and Victoria University of Wellington, where he graduated with an M.A. with Honours in English. He then trained at Christchurch Teachers’ College in 1967 and in 1968 married Alison Clare Wylde. They have three daughters.

From 1969-1972 he studied at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, graduating with a Ph.D. in linguistics. After teaching for two years at Burnside High School in Christchurch he joined the staff of the University of Canterbury. There he has served as Dean of Arts and Head of the Linguistics Department as well as in numerous other capacities. He was awarded a D.Sc. by the University of Canterbury in 2001. He is currently Professor of Linguistics. He has been a visiting scholar at Utrecht University, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, and Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies. He has taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Bard College and Bethany College in the USA, as well as Dalian University of Foreign Languages in the People’s Republic of China and Uniten University in Malaysia.

He has published three books of poetry and four academic texts and monographs, as well as numerous articles, book chapters and reviews. He is on the editorial boards of three academic journals and has held two Fulbright Fellowships in the USA.
