In the late 1970s, he left academia to become a full-time writer; from 1979-80 he was literary editor of the New Zealand Listener, and from 1981-7 literary fellow at various universities in Australasia. In 1988, he returned to Victoria University as professor of English, and since 1997 has been director of the Stout Research Centre.
