Roma Potiki was born in Lower Hutt in 1958, of Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri and Ngati Rangitihi descent, and educated at Wainuiomata College. Her first collection of poetry, Stones in Her Mouth, appeared in 1992. She has since had three other volumes published: Roma Potiki (1995), Shaking the Tree (1998), and Oriori (1999). In 2000, she was one of twelve poets to have new work commissioned for the ‘Parihaka: The Art of Passive Resistance’ exhibition at the City Gallery, Wellington. Potiki is also a prominent playwright, theatre actor and director, artist, arts adminstrator, and curator.
