Elizabeth Isichei published poetry in Landfall, The Listener, Comment, NZ Poetry Yearbook and elsewhere between 1958 and her departure for Oxford in 1962. In the years which followed she concentrated mainly on academic writing. She taught at African universities for sixteen years, and collected and translated much indigenous oral literature, including oral poetry. She was founder editor of Jos Oral History and Literature Texts.

She returned to poetry in the late nineties. Her work has appeared in four anthologies and in The Listener, Sport, Spin, WinterSpin, Poetry NZ and Glottis. She is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Otago.
