Bio / Bibliography:

I was born in Christchurch in 1947. I lived in England, Tonga (NZ Correspondence), and Uganda as a child. Most of my secondary schooling was at St. Cuthbert’s College, Auckland. I attended Auckland University from 1966-1968, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. I married in 1969 but have since divorced.

I completed a one-year graduate course at Auckland Secondary Teacher’s College, taught for a couple of years, then travelled extensively in England and Europe. I spent three years in Papua New Guinea and on my return studied for the Diploma in English as a Second Language at Victoria University. I then taught secondary school and at a Polytechnic.

I lived for five years (1985-1990), in a cottage at Days Bay, Wellington, across the road from the house where Katherine Mansfield holidayed in her youth. I then moved to Picton and started working on my book, Katherine Mansfield in Picton, which was published in 2000. I also continued writing poetry. I have a daughter, MaryAnne (1990).

My interests are reading, gardening, listening to music, walking, knitting and swimming. I belong to several historical groups: Life member of the Edwin Fox Restoration Society (Picton), Picton Historical Society, Marlborough Historical Society, New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the New Zealand Forest and Bird Society. I am an active member of Picton Writers and Picton Poets, Friends of the Library (Picton), and am on the committee of Creative Marlborough (Marlborough Community Arts Council). I have typed, proof read and helped edit several books written by others. I have acted as a guide for Katherine Mansfield walks around Picton and written a self-guide brochure. Through Picton Poets and Picton Writers I have been involved with the organisation of Montana Poetry Day (Picton), and Artrageous - an annual community arts day in Blenheim - and the annual Cool Book Fest.

Published Writing:

October 2000: Non-Fiction book: Katherine Mansfield in Picton, Cape Catley.
Poetry published in Marlborough newspapers and New Zealand Poetry Society anthologies.
Forthcoming: Poem: ‘As I Grow Older’, in My Garden, My Paradise, ed. Christine Stachurski, Hazard Press (scheduled for May 2003)

Dear Julie,
You seem to lead a very interesting life!
I would love to read your poems about Picton. I am currently working on a drama project with my students and we are searching for poems and songs to do with the sea, storms, picton in 196o`ies, the wahine, etc... Under which title are they published?

Thank you so much. Jill

Hi Jill
Sorry to take so long to get back to you.
Picton Poets have just launched a poetry anthology called "Reflections". I have 4 poems about Picton and the Marlborough Sounds in it and there are 12 other contributors. You might like to interloan it from Marlborough District Libraries or order it direct from the printer www.prismaprint.co.nz
I also have a couple of framed poems about Picton in the Eco Artists NZ exhibition currently on at Lochmara Lodge until 12 October.
Thanks for your enquiry. Julie
